Ramping Up Again
Greetings and welcome to the new subscribers!

The subject line of the last newsletter in the fall was 'Winding Down Quickly!' Today's subject line could have been 'Ramping Up Quickly!' It feels quick to me because I've been behind and am now cramming in a couple of months worth of work all at once. There was a lot to take care of between tech issues, medical issues (I'm fine...), and working on The Book for UNM Press. I couldn't seem to find any news for the newsletter. But here we are. Finally! And the 2025 growing season is upon us!

CSA Shares for 2025
I changed things up a bit this year. I have cut back on varieties that haven't sold well after a trial period. By sticking with what you like best, I'll have room for more Shishito peppers, Sungold tomatoes, Zinnias, and others that you love. This will simplify my workload, too. Fewer varieties = less paperwork. Yay!

I vowed to add more flowers. New this year are Cosmos, Bachelor Buttons, Amaranth, and Coleus.

Our seedy friend, Chuck Havlick, sent me some Zapallo de Tronco seed, aka avocado squash, he grew and saved. What a prolific plant! I planted a hill of two and was overwhelmed with fruit! My freezer is full! It's a round meaty squash, similar to that used for calabacitas. Harvest when they are between 2-4" across. When cooked, it doesn't put out as much water as zucchini. The texture is creamy (like an avocado - get it?!) and the flavor is rich. I've added it to zucchini and yellow squash this year.

I'm growing fewer peppers, too. I'm cutting out Anaheim (Hatch) and some of the hot peppers. It's too much trouble when there are only a few orders for each. But there'll be room for more Shishitos! And Jalapeños!

Christmas Gifts
I have great stocking stuffers, and I'll ship. I don't gift wrap, but I could pack with tissue paper. I can meet easily at KTAO or anywhere in town. I'm pretty flexible right now.

Of course, The Book! The second edition will be out in the spring, but I don't have an exact date yet. What's unique about The Book is that it gets you planning over the winter with a long January chapter detailing how to start a garden journal (write shit down!), easy vegetables, flowers, and herbs to grow, companion planting and rotations, and seed saving, all of which you have to accommodate for. The February chapter goes into specialty gardens, which also need to be in your plan. The Book is the perfect winter project for a lush garden next summer. So if you don't have one or you know someone who needs one, now is the perfect time to get it to start dreaming about your next harvest.
