June is upon us. Most of your gardens should be planted by now. The weather has been perfect for planting, AND I've noticed very few noseeums! I've heard one or two buzz around my head, but I'm not getting chewed up like usual. They always show up when we are earnestly planting!

We've had a little rain (very little at my house!), and there's some in the forecast this week. Fingers crossed for a good soaking of the yard. June is usually sunny and dry, and I get a good workout dragging hoses around. Then the monsoons come late in the month (fingers crossed again...) and ease the burden.

Water in your new plantings so they get established. After a few days or a week, you should see new growth, which says success!

Other Things to Do This Month
With all that watering from rain and your efforts, weeds will run rampant. They come out easily when the soil is damp. I go out to the garden every morning to check on everything and pull a few weeds at the same time.
|
Keep up with watering and weeding all month. Garlic scapes will be coming soon, and lettuce, peas, radishes, and other greens will be ready to eat.
|
Deadhead your flowering shrubs, like lilacs. When flowers are allowed to form seed, they sap energy from the plant that it will need to grow this year and flower next year. While you're at it, prune shrubs for shape, size, and air circulation. I pruned lower growth from my shrubs this year to encourage height instead of width.
|
Trim back flowers of spring bulbs, too, for the same reason. You don't want them forming seed. Let the leaves die back naturally then remove them. Over the next several weeks, they'll send energy to the bulb for good growth next year.
