In last month's newsletter, I mentioned that old saying, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. I've never experienced that here, though. March always seems to come in like a lamb and go out like a lion. And it did this year! Despite the most insanely warm March I've ever seen, the beginning of the month was mild, and the 31st was unsettled and stormy. On April 1, we actually got good rain! I got almost an inch, but on the south side of town, people reported 1.5"! Let's hope the long-range forecast for a wetter spring and summer hold true.

The New Spring Share

The I'm-Mostly-Retired CSA Share will be ready about May 1st. Since there are way fewer orders, I may be delivering to town and KTAO. I'll keep you posted. You can always come out here for pick-up and the 'farm tour,' too! Of course, if you have questions, please feel free to email me!

April Garden Tasks
Finish garden clean-up, and get ready to plant later in the month. Cool weather crops can go in the ground then, weather permitting.
|
Prep your beds with compost and turning. I highly recommend getting a broadfork instead of using a rototiller. Since I've been using one, I have more worms and fewer weeds. There's less destruction to the ecosystem you've carefully created, and because a broadfork gets in deep, nutrients, air, and water, reach roots farther down.

Put your hummingbird feeders out. They came early this year to many places. I heard one yesterday but haven't seen them at the feeder yet.
|
Divide perennials, clip back spent flowers of spring bulbs, organize your storage spaces, and make sure your irrigation system is ready.
|
Start warm season crops in the first half of the month. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, basil, and many flowers need 6-8 weeks of growth before planting out.
|

Enjoy all the new growth! I walk around the yard every day and marvel at how quickly things grow this time of year. Every day it's different! Go check out your yard!
