Mother Nature Beat Me to It
Greetings and welcome to the new subscribers!
I wrote the bulk of this newsletter at the end of August with the typical lecture I give this time of year about preparing for the first frost, which is usually in the second half of September. I remind you to watch the overnight temperatures and be ready to cover your plants if frost threatens.
I was waylaid by an injury, so the newsletter wasn't finished and didn't go out. In the meantime, temps dropped to below 40º at my house, and colder parts of Taos County saw their first frost on September 2. I don't think anyone saw this coming! I can bypass the lecture. Mother Nature gave the best reminder.
The little zap of cold hastened the ripening of my peppers, though! Jalapeños and chiltepin started turning red, hot wax turned orange, and the others put out more fruit in a hurry!

Wednesday was colder, and then they were almost all orange!

Last Call for THE BOOK!
The second edition of THE BOOK published by UNM Press will be out in late winter 2025, so the first edition that I self-published will no longer be available after this month. If you need copies for yourself or holiday gifts, let me know! I can meet you in town or ship to friends out of state, and you're always welcome to come out to the house to pick one up and check out the flowers before they get hit by frost.
What's unique about THE BOOK is that it gets you planning over the winter with a long January chapter detailing how to start a garden journal (write shit down!), easy vegetables, flowers, and herbs to grow, companion planting and rotations, and seed saving, all of which you have to accommodate for. The February chapter goes into specialty gardens, which also need to be in your plan. THE BOOK is the perfect winter project for a lush garden next summer.

I'm at Casey's table at the Talpa Community Market for four more Fridays and will be at the plant sale this Sunday. See the events section below.
You can also find THE BOOK at Earthgoods, Moxie, Taos Herb, Cid's, KOKO, Petree's, and Buttercup Salon.

Events
The Taos Chapter of the NM Native Plant Society is hosting the final plant sale of the year on Sunday, September 15 from 10-1 at the Taos Land Trust. We'll have native and adaptable perennials, trees, and shrubs, houseplants, succulents, and fruit trees. Fall is the BEST time for planting trees, shrubs, and perennials. They'll establish roots now and put energy into flowering in the spring.
I'll be there with THE BOOK, Princess Pine succulents, baby rosemary plants, The Write Shit Down Garden Journal, Ranchitos keychains, bumper stickers, t-shirts, and Helen! I'm also having an end-of-the-year closeout sale on Renee's Garden Seeds. Packet Bundles are $20 for 8 packets of cool and warm weather varieties for direct seeding. Scatter Cans are $14. Stock up for 2025!
The Talpa Community Market continues for four more weeks on Fridays from 8-2. It's a great fruit year, so get some to eat fresh and put away for winter. There are also baked goods, crafts, houseplants, perennials, fruit trees, and great company.
